Who was the first African American student to attend the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss)?

James Meredith was the first African American student to attend the University of Mississippi. He enrolled in 1962 after a legal battle, and his admission was enforced amid violent resistance. Charles Houston, Stokely Carmichael, and Thurgood Marshall were influential figures in other civil rights struggles, but they were not Ole Miss’s first Black student.
