Read Gidget’s blog.Blog: Gidget Loves GadgetsPOST:Guys, you know me, you know that there isn’t a device that I can resist. New technology! Yippee! Bring it on. But when I heard that they are soon going to bring cell-phone service to the subway tunnels I gasped. (Okay, maybe it wasn’t a gasp, but it sure was a sigh!) Are you really going to unleash at least twenty-five cell-phone calls in a crowded train at rush hour? Why can’t people just make their calls on the subway platform before they get on the train? This is one case where just because we can do it, does it really need to be done?
Read the blog.Ben’s Doggone Dog Blog BEN: What’s the best way to get a pooch to behave? Reward him (or her)! Rewarding good behavior works better than punishing bad behavior (at least with dogs). Think about it. No one likes to be yelled at, and that includes canines! Dogs are a lot happier if their owner isn’t yelling “STOP BARKING!” My dog Yoda barks a lot. So what I do is this: If he stops barking when I ask him to, I make a little tiny clicking sound with a clicker (like a castanet) and give him a treat and say, “Good doggie.” This encourages him to behave.

Legend of Film NoirAlfred Hitchcock was one of the greatest movie directors ever. The films of today that terrify usually do so with graphic violence. Hitchcock, who made movies from the 1920s through the 1970s, made some of the darkest films ever with minimal or no violence. The key ingredient of Hitchcock’s genius was the suspense he built into each film. In this scene from Notorious, Ingrid Bergman plays Alicia, a beautiful German-born woman, who marries Sebastian, a Nazi in Brazil, in order to spy on him for the US government. In this tense scene, Sebastian hosts a party at his mansion. Alicia plans to sneak another US agent, Devlin (played by Cary Grant), into Sebastian’s wine cellar to look for top-secret information. If Sebastian and the Nazis discover her, she knows they will kill her. COMMENT:I love this movie! I agree, Hitchcock was the most brilliant director ever!

Read the blog about Sequoia Nature Preserve.Blog: Forest ForeverPOST: There’s been a lot of talk lately about cutting down the Sequoia Nature Preserve to make a neighborhood park. The space would include a playground, ball field, picnic area, and soccer field. My feeling is, what about the forest? The Sequoia Nature Preserve is one of the most beautiful places. I’ve spent my childhood exploring it. I can’t imagine the trees being cut down or life without it. The local wildlife would suffer too. Would you really want to destroy the natural habitat of so many animals all for a park? COMMENT: We need to encourage kids to get more exercise. New sports facilities would inspire kids to get outside more and get moving. I’m all for it.RESPONSE:Exercise is good, no doubt about that, but you don’t need it from sports facilities or team sports. The Sequoia Nature Preserve has miles of paths where people walk, even jog. And when kids are walking in the forest, they area also breathing cleaner air and the surroundings are peaceful—it’s a healthy environment for people to get exercise and just get away from city life.

Also, giving dogs a lot of treats will make them gain too much weight.

Dogs actually have amazing hearing and can detect sounds in the frequency range of approximately 67 to 45,000 Hz. You’re right that it isn’t healthy for dogs to eat too much, but small treats won’t make them overweight.
