Marjane and Amal have very different experiences, which are revealed in the texts and which help explain the characters’ perspectives. Marjane goes to a coed French school when she is young, but later attends an Islamic school for girls. The law requires her to wear a hijab both in and out of school, whether she wants to or not. As a result of this experience, she views the veil negatively. On the other hand, Amal goes to an Islamic high school, after having attended a Catholic school for much of her childhood. In the novel, the narrator talks about choosing whether or not to wear the hijab outside of school. She comes to admire and respect the girls who make the choice to do so. As a result of her experience, she displays a more positive perspective on wearing the veil.
