How did Marquette and Jolliet strengthen French claims to the area around the Mississippi River?

Marquette and Jolliet strengthened France’s claims by exploring the Mississippi River and documenting the region for France. Their expedition did not drive the Spanish out, and the key contribution described here was exploration rather than enlisting Indigenous peoples to claim land. The correct choice is “They explored the Mississippi River.”
