Read the following quotation by US children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman."Millions of our children are being left behind without the most basic human supports they need to survive and thrive . . . Homeless shelters, child hunger, and child suffering have become normalized in the richest nation on earth. It’s time to reset our moral compass and redefine how we measure success.”—Marian Wright Edelman
Answer
A
The United States is a rich nation that provides for all of its children.
B
The United States measures success by how it treats children in need.
C
The United States needs to focus more on improving the lives of children.
D
The United States has never provided any assistance to children in need.
Explanation
Edelman says many children lack basic support and that hunger, homelessness, and suffering have become normal in the United States. She calls for the country to reset its moral compass and rethink how it measures success, which supports focusing more on improving the lives of children. Choice C best captures her message; she does not claim that the country helps every child or has never provided assistance.
