Introduction to Heritage and Multicultural American Identities: Contemporary Voices (1970–2000)

Question 8 • 25-26 6th Six Weeks TX-College Prep English

Which excerpt from Sandra Cisneros’s story "Mericans" best reveals the influence of American culture on the children?

Answer

“We’re waiting for the awful grandmother who is inside dropping pesos into la ofrenda box before the altar to La Divina Providencia.”

“Some with fat rags tied around their legs and others with pillows, one to kneel on, and one to flop ahead.”

“‘I’m Flash Gordon. You’re Ming the Merciless and the Mud People.’ I don’t mind being Ming the Merciless, but I don’t like being the Mud People.”

“Why do churches smell like the inside of an ear? Like incense and the dark and candles in blue glass?”

Explanation

The children’s pretend play uses characters from Flash Gordon, an American science-fiction comic and television series. That reference directly shows American popular culture shaping their games. The other excerpts focus on religious customs and observations rather than American cultural influence.
