A part of the Calvin cycle has been removed from the diagram on the right. What occurs at this stage of the cycle?
Two G3P molecules leave the cycle. The G3P molecules are used to make organic molecules like glucose and sucrose.
What did you include in your response?
In one to three sentences, describe what happens during the carbon fixation stage of the Calvin cycle.
During the carbon fixation stage, carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere is attached to a five-carbon sugar called ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP). This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme rubisco and results in the formation of two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (PGA).
In one to three sentences, describe what happens during the reduction stage of the Calvin cycle.
ATP and NADPH transfer chemical energy to 3-PGA. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P) is created. G3P is used to make sugar.
In one to three sentences, describe what happens during the regeneration stage of the Calvin cycle.
G3P is converted into RuBP. The enzyme rubisco speeds up the reaction.
