The Social Self

Question 9 • 16041de1 ECAD Fall 2026 - Q1 - Sociology - S1

Explain the “I” and “me” in role-making.

Answer

Answer:

The “me” is the part of the self that understands and internalizes society’s expectations. The “I” is the spontaneous, active response to those expectations. In role-making, people draw on the “me” to understand a role and use the “I” to act on it, interpret it, or make it their own.
