Thinking Geographically

Question 8 • CAP Human Geography

Geographers seek to answer two key questions when they study the world: "where?" and "why there?" A geographer can study any process taking place in the world today by answering these questions. In a short paragraph, identify one of your interests (maybe it's sports, games, or another hobby). How could you answer geography's two key questions when studying this interest?

Answer

Answer:

One of my interests is soccer. I could ask where soccer is most popular by mapping the locations of teams, leagues, stadiums, and players. I could then ask why it is popular there by studying factors such as local culture, available fields, school programs, climate, and access to professional teams. Comparing different places would show geographic patterns in the sport.
