Trading Posts, Forts, and Missions

Question 2 • 670101 Oklahoma History & Government – MYERS, JOSHUA A

What was one reason the Three Forks region was an effective site for early French trading posts?

Answer

The local American Indian tribes warred against each other for the greatest access to French goods.

The local American Indian tribes had pre-existing forts that the French used once they were able to evacuate the natives.

The nearby Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris Rivers allowed ease of transportation of goods and people.

The mineral-rich mines surrounding the area allowed French traders to develop a marketable trading system with American Indians.

Explanation

The Three Forks region was where the Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris Rivers came together. Rivers made it easier for French traders to travel and transport goods, so the region was a practical place to establish trading posts. The correct choice is “The nearby Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris Rivers allowed ease of transportation of goods and people.”
