Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image courtesy of USGS In a short paragraph, explain the basics of the theory of plate tectonics. What does continental drift tell us about what happened to these plates in the past?

The theory of plate tectonics states that Earth’s rigid outer layer is divided into large plates that slowly move over the softer asthenosphere. As the plates separate, collide, or slide past one another, they form features such as mountains, volcanoes, trenches, and earthquake zones. Continental drift shows that the continents were once joined together in the supercontinent Pangaea and gradually moved apart as the plates shifted to their present locations.
Analyze the photos below and answer the question that follows. Images by laura0509 and Let Ideas Compete These two images show humid tropical and humid continental climate zones. Each climate zone has a different temperature and experiences different types of seasons. In a short paragraph, choose one of these two zones and explain why it is more appealing to you. Which of these zones would you rather live in?

I would choose the humid tropical climate because I prefer warm temperatures and lush green surroundings. This climate stays warm throughout the year and has rainy and drier seasons rather than cold winters. The palm trees, abundant vegetation, and flowing water shown in the image make this zone appealing to me. I would rather live in a humid tropical climate than a humid continental climate because I enjoy warm weather and outdoor activities.

Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image by Mdf Identify the map projection style shown on the map above. What are the pros and cons of this particular projection design? Is this projection more appealing to you than others you've seen in this lesson? In a short paragraph, describe this projection and its appeal.

The map uses the Robinson projection, a compromise projection that gives the world a balanced, rounded appearance. Its main advantage is that it reduces extreme distortion of the continents and provides an appealing general-purpose view of Earth. However, it does not preserve area, distance, shape, or direction perfectly, and distortion increases near the edges and poles, especially in Antarctica. I find this projection more appealing than many others because the continents look reasonably proportioned and the curved outline resembles the shape of the globe.
