What North American animal did the Spanish call humpbacked cows?

The Spanish described the large, shaggy North American bison as “humpbacked cows” because of its prominent shoulder hump and cattle-like appearance. The matching choice is buffalo; a donkey, horse, or camel does not fit that description.
