Read the excerpt from "Mending Wall.” He moves in darkness as it seems to me, Not of woods only and the shade of trees. He will not go behind his father's saying, And he likes having thought of it so well He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors." Which best describes the theme revealed in this excerpt?
Answer
A
Fences help people connect with their neighbors.
B
Neighbors can understand one another with little words.
C
Some people prefer to stay disconnected from their neighbors.
D
Fences can be more interesting than one’s neighbors.
Explanation
The speaker describes his neighbor as moving in darkness and repeating his father’s saying, “Good fences make good neighbors,” without questioning it. This suggests the neighbor values keeping a boundary between himself and others rather than connecting with them. The theme is that some people prefer to stay disconnected from their neighbors.
