Opinion: Support Wilson’s position that the U.S. should join the League to promote lasting peace. III. Conclusion: The Senate should ratify the treaty and the U.S. should join the League of Nations.

Using the outline you created, write a one-paragraph editorial commenting on the opinion you have chosen to defend.

Answer:

President Wilson was right to push for the League of Nations, and the Senate should have approved the Treaty of Versailles. The war had shown that isolation no longer protected the United States, and a world organization was needed to settle disputes before they became another global conflict. Although some senators feared the League would drag America into foreign wars and limit Congress’s power to declare war, the greater danger was returning to the old system of rival alliances that had caused World War I. By rejecting the treaty, the Senate weakened the peace and left the world without the collective security Wilson envisioned. America should have joined the League to help guarantee a lasting peace.
