Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image by E Pluribus Anthony The map above shows Canada's provinces and territories. What type of map is this? In a short paragraph, identify two kinds of information you could gather from this map.

This is a political map because it shows Canada’s provinces and territories, their boundaries, and capital cities. Two kinds of information I could gather are the names and locations of each province or territory and the locations of their provincial or territorial capitals, as well as the national capital, Ottawa.
Analyze the image below and answer the question that follows. What is the International Date Line? Describe its geographic location. Why doesn't it follow a straight line? Why do we need it?

The International Date Line is an imaginary line near 180° longitude, opposite the Prime Meridian, running mostly through the Pacific Ocean and roughly perpendicular to the Equator. It zigzags around islands and countries to avoid dividing territories and communities between two different dates. It is needed to establish where the calendar date changes by one day as people travel around the world.
Michael’s hometown is located at 41° N latitude. Kevin lives at 12° N latitude. Which of these two students lives closer to the Equator?
Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image by Mdf The Mercator map is historically one of the world's most popular map projections. Describe this projection. Why was it created, and what kinds of distortion can you see?

The Mercator projection places meridians and parallels on a rectangular grid and was created mainly for navigation because compass courses appear as straight lines. It preserves local angles and shapes reasonably well, but distorts area and distance increasingly toward the poles. Greenland and the polar regions appear much larger than they really are, while the poles are stretched and cannot be represented accurately.
Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image by Mdf The Goode projection distorts the Earth in some ways, but presents it accurately in others. Which of the following statements about this map projection is false?

__________ maps are primarily used to display boundaries and borders between regions and states.
Which of the following measurements helps us determine distance from the Prime Meridian?
Analyze the map below and answer the question that follows. Image by Mdf Identify the map projection style shown on the map above. What are the pros and cons of this particular projection design? Is this projection more appealing to you than others you've seen in this lesson? In a short paragraph, describe this projection and its appeal.

This map uses the Robinson projection. It is a compromise projection that gives the world an attractive oval shape with curved parallels and meridians. Its main advantage is that it provides a balanced, visually appealing view with less extreme overall distortion than many other projections. However, it does not preserve area, shape, distance, or direction perfectly, and distortion increases near the edges and poles. I find this projection more appealing than projections such as Mercator because the continents look more proportionate and the entire world fits naturally into the map, although it is less useful for precise navigation or measurement.
Eva’s home is located at 72° 30’ E longitude. Sophia lives at 72° 30’ W longitude. Which student lives closer to the Prime Meridian?
Imagine that you want to help plan for a new mall or shopping center in your city. You want to make a presentation to show your city council why this new place is a great idea. How could maps help you make your case? In a short paragraph, describe two ways that maps could help you.
Maps could show the best location for the shopping center by displaying population areas, roads, and traffic patterns. They could also show nearby businesses and available land, helping explain how the mall would be accessible and benefit the community.
