When writing an argumentative essay, what is the most important reason authors conduct research?

Authors research to find reliable facts, examples, and other evidence that support the claims in their arguments. This makes the essay more convincing than simply stating an opinion. Finding other people’s opinions or long quotations is not the main purpose of research.
